Aging in place: staying home with support

Aging in place means staying in your own home and bringing in help as needed — a home health aide for a few hours a day, meal delivery, a medical alert device, grab bars and ramps, or a family member checking in regularly. It's usually the most familiar and often the least disruptive option, especially early on.

It works best when needs are moderate and there's some support network nearby, whether that's family, neighbors, or a reliable home care agency. It tends to get harder to sustain if someone needs help around the clock or has safety risks, like wandering, that a home environment can't fully address.
